The Kentucky Capitol was evacuated Wednesday morning after Kentucky’s secretary of state, like other state offices around the country, received a bomb threat.

After searching the Capitol and grounds, Kentucky State Police allowed people to return to the building in early afternoon.

Michon Lindstrom, a spokesperson for the office, said the Capitol was evacuated after the deputy secretary of state received an email about 7:45 a.m. saying explosives had been placed in the Capitol. The message was a mass email sent to multiple state offices across the country.

“As soon as our deputy SOS received the email she forwarded it to KSP (Kentucky State Police) who evacuated the building out of an abundance of caution,” Lindstrom said around noon Wednesday. “We are still waiting for an all clear to return to the building.”

In social media posts, Gov. Andy Beshear said his administration is aware of similar threats made to other offices in other states.

“While everyone is safe, KSP (Kentucky State Police) has asked everyone to evacuate the state Capitol and is investigating a threat received by the Secretary of State’s Office,” the governor said.?

Similar threats were reported Wednesday in Mississippi, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana and Oklahoma.
